At Wisdom of the Elders, we are honored to highlight the incredible work of our staff, and today, we celebrate the artistry and dedication of Karrie Young. A recent video production showcases Karrie’s remarkable talent as a Native Flute Player, offering a glimpse into her deep connection to music, culture, and community.

Music for the Journey Beyond

Karrie Young’s flute playing carries a profound purpose beyond music—it serves as a sacred offering for those transitioning from life to the next journey. With deep reverence for Indigenous traditions, Karrie plays for people who are crossing over, using the healing power of the Native flute to bring comfort, peace, and a sense of spiritual guidance in their final moments. Her music becomes a bridge between worlds, honoring the passage of life with grace and respect. This deeply personal and ceremonial practice reflects her commitment to care, community, and the ancestral wisdom that guides her path.

A Life Rooted in Tradition and Service

Karrie Young is from Portland, Oregon, and is a proud member of the Muscogee Creek Nation of Oklahoma. Her life’s work is deeply intertwined with her Native heritage and the service of others. In addition to her role at Wisdom of the Elders, Karrie provides care for Native American Elders, ensuring that their traditions and stories continue to be honored and preserved. She also actively contributes to the Portland Indigenous Market Place, a vital space that uplifts Indigenous artists, entrepreneurs, and cultural practitioners.

The Power of the Native Flute

Music is a profound part of Karrie’s journey, and her flute playing is both a personal and communal expression of healing and storytelling. The Native flute has long been a source of comfort, ceremony, and connection, and through her playing, Karrie shares the spirit of her ancestors and the beauty of Indigenous traditions. The recent video production captures her artistry in a moving and authentic way, offering a moment of reflection and appreciation for the power of music in Native culture.

A Guide in the Forest and Beyond

Beyond her musical gifts, Karrie has recently achieved certification as a Forest Therapy Guide, further deepening her commitment to healing and wellness. Forest Therapy, inspired by the Japanese practice of Shinrin-Yoku (forest bathing), is a guided experience that encourages participants to engage with nature in a mindful, restorative way. This new path aligns beautifully with her work in community care and traditional knowledge, reinforcing the connection between the land, well-being, and cultural heritage.
