Internship, Week 1
Wisdom intern William Cawley (Lock Haven University) has joined Wisdom’s team for this year’s Summer Field Science Camp. He expressed his enthusiasm for his service learning internship:
For my internship, I am helping peer mentors with video production and post-production for ‘Discovering Yidong Xinag’. So far, it has been an incredible experience. After only a few days, I have learned a lot about Native culture just being immersed in it, and have realized how important Native American cultural preservation is.
By teaching the Native peer mentors the correct way to shoot and edit video, they will be documenting their culture and environment and help to spread awareness of Native issues in today’s multimedia-driven society. All my tasks have been meaningful, which is something many interns can’t say as they are stuck doing “busy work”. I have researched and created homework and outlines, watched informative videos, and prepared for a busy upcoming week supporting the Native peer mentors as they video record their group of youth at camp.
I would recommend interning for Wisdom of the Elders to anyone looking to grow as a person. I am thankful to be a part such a driven organization that engages closely with the community and provides a mentally healthy workplace for all involved.
