Two special Pacific Northwest Tribal Storytelling events are being held in Portland on Friday afternoon and evening, February 17, 2017 at Portland Community College Cascade Campus. These events feature traditional First Foods and integrate Native cultural arts with traditional ecological knowledge and other STEAM* elements integral to indigenous science (*STEAM stands for science, technology, engineering, ARTS, and mathematics). The Northwest Indian Storytellers Association and Wisdom of the Elders, Inc. are holding both events at Moriarty Auditorium located at 705 North Killingsworth, Portland (97217).

The Traditional First Foods Symposium is being held Friday afternoon, February 17, 2017 at 2:30 5:00 pm. Guest speakers will discuss how shifting environments are impacting tribes and their First Foods traditions, including salmon, lamprey eel, camas roots, and other threatened and endangered first foods species. This will provide the public with an opportunity to learn from Native educators and traditional food gatherers, and raise awareness of the intersection of Native American cultural heritage with subsistence practices in a changing climate.
Our evening of tribal storytelling will take place at 7:00 pm on Friday, February 17 at PCC Cascade in Moriarty Auditorium. We will celebrate our eleventh season of tribal storytelling in the Pacific Northwest. The Advisory Council members of the Northwest Indian Storytellers Association will share traditional stories about traditional First Foods. Tribal storytellers and song carriers have always acknowledged the link between their stories and songs to traditional First Foods, and are increasing communicating the critical importance of restoring Pacific Northwest ecosystems to support declining species.
These events are funded by National Endowment for the Arts and sponsored by Northwest Indian Storytellers Association, Portland Community Colleges Native Nations Club and Multicultural Program, and Wisdom of the Elders, Inc.
Tickets are now available at Brown Paper Tickets. To purchase, go to http://bpt.me/2817174. This is a sliding scale event and no one will be turned away for lack of funds.
